The Big Bang Theory is a show many of us loved for a decade. The episode where Penny’s car finally gives up the ghost is a memorable one. As she explained, the red engine light came on….but she just ignored it and the car kept driving. And really, many of us do just that. So Penny ignored the warning signs…until the car died.
The beauty of cars is that they’re built with those warnings. So you know when there’s something wrong. And you can do something about it before things go wrong. But when it comes to your business image and your visual brand, there is no such warning system to help you along.
Here’s a newsflash: your brand image doesn’t come with a warning to let you know things about to expire.
- There’s no warning that tells you your brand image needs maintenance or repair.
- No annoying bell that goes off saying it’s time to upgrade your logo, brochures, website.
- No email that says today is the day to revamp your marketing message.
Your business image doesn’t live in a vacuum. Just because you’ve had things professionally designed doesn’t mean things will remain bright, shiny and useful year after year. Time marches on, and eventually things get old, faded, and simply outdated.
So just like your car, your brand image needs maintenance. If you haven’t paid any attention in over three years, then the work piles up, and your to-do list becomes one long and ugly affair. It all gets added to your already-long “to do list” and the stress piles up.
That’s why it’s a good idea to schedule a “brand maintenance” at least once a year. This will help you avoid the overwhelm of having to upgrade a ton of stuff at once. And usually at the worst time.
When you make the time to maintain your visual brand it’s easier to catch little items that could grow into bigger problems later on. At the very least you’ll be aware that there’s items that will need addressing in the near future.
What if you’re not sure what needs to be reviewed?
