Let me ask you a serious question:
Does your business have a recognizable face?
Have you built a business that
- has an identifiable logo?
- has a specific colour it’s known for (think of the Giant Tiger yellow)?
- has a specific look that you carry through all of your marketing channels?
Or is it one of those companies with a generic logotype, without much character, that really doesn’t stand out a great deal?
With the amount of visual information available these days, it really is all about the branding. And a business without some character and memorable brand is certainly at a disadvantage. That’s why these days everywhere in the business world it’s all about “building the brand.”
“Building your brand” isn’t about vanity, showing off, or making your business seem grander than it really is. It’s about building an entity that will resonate with your buyers and quickly identify you, what you stand for, and what you deliver. The big benefit of the branding process is that it helps your audience get to know you, trust you, and choose you.

Think of Sleep Country. They have built a mattress empire across Canada with that now-famous jingle “why buy a mattress anywhere else?”
Years ago Subway revolutionized the fast food industry by becoming the first franchise to exclusively sell freshly-made submarine sandwiches. Everything about their brand represents their “eat fresh” philosophy: from the tagline, to the colours (green and yellow) to the photos on their store walls.
Granted, you might not become the next Subway, and I probably won’t be the next Sleep Country. But we can both create strong, distinctive brands that will help us stand out and become synonymous with that one specific thing we sell.
All this talk of “building a brand” can be exhausting and overwhelming But just remember:
A brand isn’t build in a day…or a month. Or even a year. It’s a process that takes time, thought, and a team to make it come alive.
